Tuberous Sclerosis

Tuberous Sclerosis

An Overview

Tuberous sclerosis is a multi-system genetic disorder that causes non-cancerous tumor growth that begins developing in the brain before spreading to other vital organs. It results in symptoms like seizures, autism, and skin abnormalities, which vary among individuals. With detailed examination, this disorder can be diagnosed early, to provide immediate treatment. Tuberous sclerosis can be inherited with the passing of one defective gene from an individual's parents.

Signs & Symptoms

The following are the symptoms to watch for in order to detect the disease early:
Skin abnormalities. Most people with tuberous sclerosis have patches of light-coloured skin, or they may develop small, harmless areas of thickened, smooth skin or reddish bumps under or around the nails. Facial growths that begin in childhood and resemble acne also are common.
Seizures. Growths in the brain may be associated with seizures, which can be the first symptom of tuberous sclerosis. In small children, a common type of seizure called infantile spasm shows up as repetitive spasms of the head and legs.
Cognitive disabilities. Tuberous sclerosis can be associated with developmental delays and sometimes intellectual disability or learning disabilities. Mental health disorders, such as autism spectrum disorder or attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), also can occur.
Behavioural problems. Common behavioural problems may include hyperactivity, self-injury or aggression, or issues with social and emotional adjustment.
Kidney problems. Most people with tuberous sclerosis develop non-cancerous growths on their kidneys, and they may develop more growths as they age.
Heart issues. Growths in the heart, if present, are usually largest at birth and shrink as the child gets older.
Lung problems. Growths that develop in the lungs may cause coughing or shortness of breath, especially with physical activity or exercise. These benign lung tumours occur more often in women than in men.
Eye abnormalities. Growths can appear as white patches on the light-sensitive tissue at the back of the eye (retina). These non-cancerous growths do not always interfere with vision.

Genetic Screening Limitations

Genetic screening can indicate whether an individual has a predisposition, or is at an increased likelihood, of having an inherited disease or disorder. However, it cannot indicate if the individual will show symptoms, how severe the symptoms will be, or whether the disease or disorder will progress over time.

A negative test result does not mean that an individual will not get an inherited disease or disorder because Qodify Genetic Screening tests are designed to detect only highly significant genetic markers which have been documented during medical research. Environmental and lifestyle factors also play a role in the development of inherited diseases, disorders, and even traits. In addition, the Qodify carrier test results are not intended to inform an individual of any risks for developing a disease, the health of the unborn child, or the child’s risk of developing the disease.

The results generated from Qodify genetic screening tests, which includes all additional health related information, is meant for informational purposes only and not an indicator of an individual’s current or future health status, nor a diagnosis for any disease, disorder, condition or other health issues. The information provided in the test results should be confirmed with a doctor or a healthcare professional in a clinical setting before any further action is to be taken – including the treatment, and type and quantity of prescription medicines to be taken (even if indicated in the drug response test results).
