An Overview

Thyroid cancer occurs in the thyroid gland, a butterfly-shaped gland located at the base of the neck. It may not show early symptoms, but as it grows, it will cause pain and swelling around the neck area. The common form of this cancer is papilloma, which is more common in women than men. Thyroid cancer has a higher genetic risk than other cancers.

Risk Factors

More common in women
Aged between 20 and 55 years
Exposure to high levels of radiation
Family history of thyroid cancer
Familial adenomatous polyposis and acromegaly

Signs & Symptoms

The following are the symptoms to watch for in order to detect the disease early:
A lump in the neck, sometimes growing quickly
Swelling in the neck
Pain in the front of the neck, sometimes going up to the ears
Hoarseness or other voice changes that do not go away
Trouble swallowing
Trouble breathing
Persistent cough that is not due to a cold

Genetic screening can indicate whether an individual has a predisposition, or is at an increased likelihood, of having an inherited disease or disorder.
