Meningococcal Disease

An Overview

Meningococcal disease is caused by the Neisseria meningitides bacteria, also known as meningococcus. The bacteria spread through respiratory and throat secretions. Infections can have deadly complications, including infections of the lining of the brain and spinal cord (meningitis), infections in the bloodstream (septicemia or bacteremia) or clotting of blood vessels (disseminated intravascular coagulation). Getting immediate medical attention is very important when infected.

Immunosuppressed

Signs & Symptoms

The following are the symptoms to watch for in order to detect the disease early:
High fever
Severe headache
Stiff neck
Vomiting or nausea with headache
Confusion or difficulty concentrating - in infants, this may appear as an inability to maintain eye contact
Seizures
Sleepiness or difficulty waking up
Sensitivity to light
Lack of interest in drinking and eating
Skin rash in some cases, such as in viral or meningococcal meningitis

Genetic screening can indicate whether an individual has a predisposition, or is at an increased likelihood, of having an inherited disease or disorder.
