An Overview

Dyslexia is a learning disability that impairs an individual’s ability to read fluently. People with dyslexia read slower than their intelligence matched peers and have issues with spelling and phonological processing.

Risk Factors

From infancy

Family history of dyslexia or other learning disabilities

Premature birth or low birth weight

Mother of child exposed to nicotine, drugs, alcohol or infection during pregnancy

Signs & Symptoms

Slow speech development with a limited vocabulary

Short attention span

Restlessness and irritability

Inability to read or slow progress in reading

Inability to write or written sentences are structured non-grammatically with spelling mistakes

The development of speech is a complex process that is influenced by environmental factors and genetic predispositions. Normally, by the age of 4 most children will be able to communicate effectively. Specific language impairment (SLI) is a language disorder that delays the mastery of language skills. Some children with SLI may not begin to talk until their third or fourth year. In some cases the SLI is the first sign of other conditions such as ADHD and autism.

Harm avoidance is characterized by feelings such as excessive worrying, pessimism, shyness, doubt, fearfulness and fatigue. This condition is correlated to low levels of serotonin. Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder is a developmental disorder which is typically characterized by hyperactivity, impulsivity and attentional distractions. Comorbid elements of disruptive behaviour disorder, oppositional defiant disorder and antisocial personality disorder may also be observed.

However, it cannot indicate if the individual will show symptoms, how severe the symptoms will be, or whether the disease or disorder will progress over time.
