An Overview

Severe combined immunodeficiency is a rare genetic disorder that is usually present during infancy, resulting in a weak immune system. Individuals with SCID are unable to fight off infections. The condition is usually fatal in the first few of years of life, unless treatment is received. Despite it being a genetic disorder, almost 80% of SCID patients show no record of a family history with a similar condition.

Risk Factors

By age 3 months
Most common form is X-linked and only presents in men
Certain ethnicities like Finnish, North Africans, Italians

Signs & Symptoms

The following are the symptoms to watch for in order to detect the disease early:
Symptoms usually present itself in early infanthood such as infections that lead to pneumonia and diarrhoea. If left untreated, it may be life-threatening.

Genetic screening can indicate whether an individual has a predisposition, or is at an increased likelihood, of having an inherited disease or disorder.
