An Overview

Niemann-Pick disease is characterized by the body's inability to metabolize and breakdown fats. This dysregulation will cause cells to malfunction and eventually die. It commonly affects the cells in the brain, liver, spleen, nerves, bone marrow and, in severe cases, lungs. Patients with Niemann-Pick disease commonly experience progressive loss of function related to the nerves, brains and other organs. It mainly affects children but can occur at any age.
