An Overview

Alpha-1-antitrypsin deficiency is a hereditary condition that can result in liver and lung diseases. Symptoms can be varied but usually develop when the individual is between 20 to 50 years old. Those with this deficiency usually develop emphysema, a disease characterized by the damage to the air sacs in the lungs, resulting in impaired oxygen absorption. Liver disease is seen in 10% of infant patients while 15% of adults develop liver damage.

Shortness of breath
Excessive cough
