Basal Cell Carcinoma

Basal Cell Carcinoma

An Overview

Basal cell carcinoma is one of the most common forms of skin cancer. It affects the basal cells, which are the cells responsible for producing new skin cells, as old ones are sloughed off. Most basal cell carcinomas are thought to be caused by long-term exposure to ultraviolet radiation, such as from the sun. It usually appears as a change in the skin, such as lesions on the face, scalp and neck.

Risk Factors

Exposure to ultraviolet rays
Aged over 50 years
Fair-skinned
Male
Chronic infections and skin inflammations

Signs & Symptoms

The following are the symptoms to watch for in order to detect the disease early:
A pearly white or waxy bump, often with visible blood vessels on your face, ears or neck. The bump may bleed, develop a crust or form a depression in the center. In darker skinned people, this type of cancer is usually brown or black.
A flat, scaly, brown or flesh-colored patch on your back or chest. Over time, these patches can grow quite large.
In rare cases, a white, waxy scar. This type of basal cell carcinoma is easy to overlook, but it may be a sign of a particularly invasive and disfiguring cancer called morpheaform basal cell carcinoma.

Genetic Screening Limitations

Genetic screening can indicate whether an individual has a predisposition, or is at an increased likelihood, of having an inherited disease or disorder. However, it cannot indicate if the individual will show symptoms, how severe the symptoms will be, or whether the disease or disorder will progress over time.

A negative test result does not mean that an individual will not get an inherited disease or disorder because Qodify Genetic Screening tests are designed to detect only highly significant genetic markers which have been documented during medical research. Environmental and lifestyle factors also play a role in the development of inherited diseases, disorders, and even traits. In addition, the Qodify carrier test results are not intended to inform an individual of any risks for developing a disease, the health of the unborn child, or the child’s risk of developing the disease.

The results generated from Qodify genetic screening tests, which includes all additional health related information, is meant for informational purposes only and not an indicator of an individual’s current or future health status, nor a diagnosis for any disease, disorder, condition or other health issues. The information provided in the test results should be confirmed with a doctor or a healthcare professional in a clinical setting before any further action is to be taken – including the treatment, and type and quantity of prescription medicines to be taken (even if indicated in the drug response test results).
